"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." — Psalm 51:10
David's prayer follows his sin with Bathsheba and Nathan's confrontation (2 Samuel 12). He does not ask for improved behavior but for a new heart—"create" (Hebrew bara) is the same verb used in Genesis 1:1, describing something only God can produce from nothing. A "clean heart" speaks of purity restored; a "right spirit" (or steadfast spirit) speaks of stability renewed. David understands that guarding the heart begins with God's work within, not human resolve alone. Proverbs 4:23 commands us to "keep thy heart with all diligence," but Psalm 51:10 shows we cannot guard what has not first been cleansed and recreated. Application: heart-guarding is partnership—divine renovation precedes human vigilance. We guard a heart God has renewed through confession, repentance, and dependence on His grace.
