Remnant of Faith

  • Dr Elder Richard L Dixon, Jr Bixby, Oklahoma (map)

The word "remnant" (Hebrew she'arith) means what remains after loss—yet in Scripture it carries hope, not despair. In Jeremiah 23:3, God declares: "And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase." Spoken against shepherds who scattered God's people (v.1–2), the promise is that God Himself will regather, shepherd, and restore His flock—preservation by divine initiative, not human effort.

Paul echoes this in Romans 11:5: "Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace." Though Israel largely rejected Christ, God's purposes did not fail; a remnant remained—chosen by grace, not works (v.6). Paul cites Elijah's day (1 Kings 19) as precedent: God always preserves a faithful few.

Together, these texts reveal a consistent pattern: God preserves a remnant through judgment, and that remnant exists "according to grace." Application: faithfulness is never measured by majority; God's remnant is defined by His gracious election, gathered and kept by Him.
